Sassy Seniors 2008-2009 League Rules

1. ORGANIZATION

The Sassy Seniors bowling league will be sanctioned as a senior league with the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). In cases not covered by the league rules, USBC rules will apply. All bowlers, regular and substitute, must be sanctioned by the USBC and its local organizations.

2. SCHEDULE

The league will consist of 10 teams with a playing strength of 4 persons per team, without regard to gender. The league will bowl on Thursdays for 35 weeks, starting on Sept. 11 and ending on May 28 . The league will not bowl on Nov. 27, Dec. 25, or Jan. 1. The league will bowl a split season of 17 weeks in each half, with the last week of each half being a position round. The 35th week will be a "Fun Day" which will not count in standings, except that the first and second half winning teams will roll off for the league title. Practice will begin at 12:30 and matches will start promptly at 12:45pm.

3. MANAGEMENT

The league will be managed by a board of directors consisting of the officers and the team captains. A majority shall constitute a quorum. Team captains will be appointed by each individual team. The entire membership shall adopt the league rules and elect officers, with a majority of members constituting a quorum.

4. SALARIES

The Secretary and Treasurer duties will be performed by a single person, who will be paid 25˘ per person per week, remitted at completion of the league schedule. The salary will not be paid until the Secretary/Treasurer has completed all requirements of the local USBC associations.

5. FEES

Each bowler will pay $8.00 per week, of which $6.00 is the bowling (lineage) fee, 25˘ is the Secretary/Treasurer salary, and $1.75 is the prize fund contribution. The non-lineage fees for the final two weeks of the season (totaling $4.00) must be paid in advance no later than the third week of the season. Absent bowlers will pay $2.00, whether or not a substitute is obtained. Substitutes will pay the $6.00 lineage fee.

6. LEAGUE FUNDS

The league’s treasury account will be handled in-house by Buffaloe Lanes. Withdrawals may be made only with the joint signatures of at least two officers, one of whom must be the Secretary /Treasurer.

7. CASH PRIZES

The president will appoint a prize committee of three members to recommend a prize schedule to be approved by the board of directors by the 4th week of the schedule. No cash prizes will be awarded for individual achievements. All prize money will be distributed to teams. Prize money will be adjusted for individual team members based on a pro-rata share of league fees actually paid. A bowler must be a paid-up member of the league for 2/3 of the season (23 weeks) in order to be eligible for prize money.

8. AVERAGES

For handicap purposes, the initial (entering) averages for each bowler will be equal to the book average in this league for the prior season. If the bowler is new to the league, their highest book average in local leagues will be used. After nine games have been bowled, the average will be based on cumulative results through the preceding week. If the bowler has no book average, their initial average will be determined retroactively based on the first complete three game series bowled.

9. HANDICAPS

Individual handicaps will be 100% of the difference between the current average and a scratch score of 200. Initial handicaps will be established based on the initial average. The team handicap for each match will be the sum of the individual handicaps in its lineup.

10. TEAM ROSTERS

The league secretary will create team rosters before the first week of bowling. Team captains must report all roster changes to the league secretary prior to bowling with the new roster. If a team roster is less than 4 players, the vacant positions will be scored as vacancies. A bowler who withdraws from the league must give two weeks written notice to the Secretary or President, and must pay the fee for those two weeks unless replaced on the roster. If no arrears exist, the final two weeks fees may be refunded. A replacement member will pay the final two weeks of fees per Rule 5.

11. SUBSTITUTES

The league will maintain a list of floating substitutes. Team captains will assign substitutes to replace a specific absent bowler or, if there is no absentee, to replace a vacant position. Substitutes can be of a different gender than the absent bowler. No substitutes are allowed during position rounds or rolloffs.

12. FORFEITURES

A legal lineup is one bowler on the current team roster. If a team cannot field a legal lineup, the opposing team will bowl as though the match were actually contested. The opposing team must bowl a score equal to or greater than its current average (a) less 10 pins per roster member (a vacancy is not a roster member) to win the game points, and (b) less 30 pins per roster member to win the series point. No points will be awarded to the forfeiting team. The same rules apply to bowling against a bye team.

13. ABSENTEE AND VACANCY SCORING

Absentees will be scored as the absent bowler’s current average plus handicap. If the absentee has not yet bowled three games in the league, the bowler will be scored as a vacancy. After three consecutive absences, the bowler will be scored as a vacancy. The vacancy score will be 120, with a handicap of 80.

14. POSTPONEMENTS

The President will appoint a committee to determine valid reasons to grant a postponement. The Board of Directors will determine whether a postponement will be granted, except in emergencies. In emergencies, the team captain requesting a postponement will notify the opposing team captain and/or the Secretary or President of the league at the earliest opportunity. The make-up match must be completed by two days prior to the next scheduled match.

15. PRE AND POST BOWLING

Neither pre-bowling nor post-bowling is permitted.

16. TARDY PLAYERS

A bowler who arrives late may enter a game and bowl the missed frames at any time before the third frame has been completed by both teams.

17. TEAM STANDINGS

Team standings will be determined on a point basis, with one point awarded for each game won and one point awarded for the series. In case of a tie game or series, the point will be split. Team standings for each half-season will be determined by total points won in that half-season. Except as provided below, team standings for the full season will be determined by total points won.

18. TIES & PLAYOFFS

Ties will not be resolved except for first place. If two or more teams tie for first place in a half, the winner will be determined by a two-frame roll-off immediately following the position round. If different teams win the two halves, they will compete in a playoff on the rolloff day to determine the league champion for the full season. The playoff will be a three-game series under the same rules governing regular league play, with the winner determined by total handicap pin fall. If the result is a tie, a two-frame roll-off will be bowled to determine the winner.
