MORNING GLORIES BOWLING LEAGUE
LEAGUE RULES
2008 - 2009 SEASON
Rule 1: Schedule
The Morning Glories Bowling League shall be sanctioned with the United States Bowling Congress through the local association. The league shall consist of 12 teams with a playing strength of 3 women. The league will bowl on Fridays for 33 weeks, commencing August 29. An organizational meeting is scheduled for August 22. All scheduled matches will start promptly at 9:30 AM, preceded by 15 minutes of practice. The league will bowl a split season with 16 weeks in the first half and 16 weeks in the second half, with a roll-off on the 33rd week. If Wake County Schools are closed or delayed 2 or more hours due to weather, Morning Glories League will not bowl. If school is delayed 1 hour, bowling will be delayed 1 hour.
Rule 2: Management
The management of the league shall be vested in the Board of Directors, which shall consist of the officers and team captains. The league membership shall elect officers and adopt league rules. A majority of those present shall constitute a quorum.
Rule 3: Fees
The amount to be paid by each bowler each week shall be $10.00, of which $7.75 will cover the cost of bowling, with the balance to be placed in the league treasury. The prize fund for the last two weeks, $4.50, shall be paid by each member before the completion of the 3rd week of the schedule.
Rule 4: Salaries
The secretary’s and treasurer’s salaries shall be $.35 each (a total of $.70) per bowler per week. Full payment shall not be authorized until the secretary has furnished all average sheets requested (including a final average sheet) to the secretary of the Capital Area USBCA.
Rule 5: Membership
If a member or team must withdraw from the league during the season, a two week notice in writing must be given to the league secretary, with a satisfactory reason for doing so. The member must pay league fees for two weeks if the vacancy is not filled within that period.
Rule 6: League Funds
An account shall be opened in the name of the league in-house (Buffaloe Lanes) in which funds will be deposited weekly. Withdrawals from the account shall be made only with the joint signatures of the officers of the league authorized to do so.
Rule 7: Prizes
The amount of a team’s prize award will be determined by their point standings after the final game of the season. To qualify for individual awards, a bowler must have bowled in at least half of the scheduled games. A bowler can only be awarded one individual award and must accept the highest of those qualified for. High series and game prizes shall be awarded in both scratch and handicap categories. Scratch prizes are the greatest value. The order of the awards from highest to lowest for the Morning Glories League is as follows: High Average – $25.00; High Series Scratch – $20.00; High Game Scratch – $20.00; High Series With Handicap – $15.00; and High Game With Handicap – $10.00.
Teams with less than three bowlers will receive the appropriate percentage of the prize fund amount based on their position in the final standings (one bowler: 33%; two bowlers: 67%). The excess monies will be divided among all bowlers.
Rule 8: Averages
A returning bowler will use her 2007 – 2008 yearbook average from this league for the first 9 games bowled, after which her average will revert to current average (that is, the bowler’s average from the first 9 games of the current season without respect to the previous season). A new bowler to the league with a yearbook average from other leagues will use her highest yearbook average for the first 9 games. If the new bowler does not have a yearbook average, she will establish her average in the first 3-game series that she bowls.
Rule 9: Handicap
The handicap allowance shall be 90%, and shall be based on the difference between each individual’s average and a scratch figure of 200. Bowlers will have handicap computed after the first 9 games, to be applied on the games in the series and on the next series in which they compete. Thereafter, handicap will be based on their current average. (In the case of a new bowler to the league without a 2007 – 2008 yearbook average, her average and handicap will be determined after her first 3 games.)
Rule 10: Team Rosters
Captains will turn in rosters of team members to the secretary on the first day of the schedule. Any roster changes must be reported to the league secretary prior to the time a new team member bowls. New players may not be added to a team’s roster in the final 2 weeks of each half or for the roll-off. No team may use a substitute in the final 2 weeks of each half or for the roll-off.
Rule 11: Substitutes
A list of roving or floating substitutes shall be maintained by the league. No one may bowl with more than one team for the regularly scheduled games each week. If a person is called to sub, that team or person getting the sub must inform her that she will need to pay the lineage fee of $7.75, and that she must be sanctioned ($17.00) unless she is already sanctioned through another league.
Rule 12: Legal Line-Up
A minimum legal line-up must include at least 1 player from the team’s current roster.
Rule 13: Forfeitures
When a game is declared forfeited, the team present shall bowl as though the game was actually contested. The team must bowl at least the team average minus 30 pins in order to win the points by forfeiture. Neither team will win points if the prescribed score is not met.
Rule 14: Absentee and Vacancy Scores
Absentee scores shall be allowed when a team has a legal line-up, but has less than a full line-up at the start of any game in a series. The absentee bowler’s score shall be her average less 10 pins. The handicap shall be figured on the actual average of the designated absentee. No team may use an absentee bowler’s average more than 3 consecutive weeks. The absentee bowler must bowl 3 consecutive games in competition before her absentee score may be used again. If she misses the fourth week, her name will be moved to the sub list. Beginning the fourth consecutive week of an absence, a vacancy score must be used. The vacancy score shall be 110 with a handicap of 81.
Rule 15: Postponements
All requests for postponements shall be filed with the president or the secretary.
Rule 16: Pre- and Post-Bowling
A team or individual may pre-bowl for as many weeks in advance of a scheduled match as desired. If a full team is pre-bowling, the scheduled team for competition MUST be notified of the dates of the pre-bowl. An officer MUST also be notified. Failure to do so will result in a forfeiture (See Rule 13). A league officer need not be present during pre- or post-bowling, but any changes in score at time of bowling must be corrected by the staff of the bowling center. If a team or individual pre- or post-bowls, bowling fees may be paid the next Friday morning that the team or individual bowls.
When pre-bowling, it is imperative to date the pre-bowl sheet with the date for which you are pre-bowling along with the name of the league.
Post-bowling must be done between the Friday missed and the following Wednesday. A bowler who says she is going to post-bowl must do so, unless an emergency occurs to make it impossible. However, in that situation, the officers MUST be contacted, and be in agreement with the reason for the inability to post-bowl. A bowler who says she is going to post-bowl but does not do so (other than for an approved emergency) will receive a zero score for the week missed. A team or individual may not post-bowl more than 3 times during the course of the league schedule.
Any individual or team pre- or post-bowling alone WILL NOT qualify for USBC awards – only house awards.
No pre- or post-bowling for the roll-off game is allowed.
Rule 17: Tardy Players
A bowler who arrives late may enter the game provided 3 frames have not been completed. Frames missed may be made up. A frame shall be considered completed when the bowler in the anchor or last position on each team has completed the frame. If the tardy bowler is not present at this point, she must wait to begin bowling until the start of the next game. If a bowler is tardy, or if she must leave before all games are completed, the bowling fee must be paid in full.
Rule 18: Position Standings
Standings shall be determined on a point basis, with 2 points awarded for each game won and 1 point for the series. Handicap will be added to the game and the series totals.
Rule 19: Roll-off
A roll-off for first place will be held on the last day of scheduled bowling between the winner of the first half and the winner of the second half. If the same team wins in both halves, the first place team will be paired with the last place team for the roll-off. The remaining teams will be paired up to bowl for remaining positions – the second place team against the third place team, the fourth place team against the fifth place team, and so on – so that all other teams will have a chance to improve their standings the last week. Placements will be determined by total points won for the year.
In case of a tie, the winner of any roll-off for first place or any other position will be determined by a three game series, which is to be bowled under the same conditions and rules that govern league play during the regular season. An extra complete frame shall be bowled in the event of a tie at the end of the roll-off series.
Rule 20: Miscellaneous
The Morning Glories League will offer a 50/50 raffle each week of league bowling for ladies that are interested in participating. Tickets will be available at a cost of 2 for $1.00. The basket of tickets will be passed from table to table, and the honor system will be used. Two tickets will be drawn each league day, and each winner will receive half of the money collected for that day.
Rule 21: USBC Rules
In cases not covered by these rules, USBC rules will apply.
