CRAZY EIGHTS
Mixed League Rules and Regulations
2008-2009 Season
rev: 08/25/2008 annual meeting
1.0 General Information
Sanctioning
The Crazy Eights Bowling League is sanctioned with the USBC.
Roster
A team shall be of mixed gender. Under no circumstances may four people of the same gender bowl on
a given team during any match. (including subs)
Frequency
The league bowls on Mondays from 6:30-9pm for 33 weeks, starting on the first Monday after Labor Day. No
bowling 12/29/2008. NOTE: House closure 12/08/08… no bowling!!!
Matches and Roll-offs
All scheduled matches begin promptly at 6:30p.m. (Warm-ups at 6:15) The season is divided into two halves of
16 weeks each, with a position round every eight weeks. If two separate teams win each of the season halves,
they must use Week 33 for their roll-off match. The League Champion is the winner of this match and the loser places
second for the season. All other teams are paired in the roll-off based on their total season points. If one team
wins both halves, that team is declared the League Champion and all teams are paired on roll-off night based
on total points and POSITIONS 2-X ARE DETERMINED BY TOTAL SEASON POINTS FOLLOWING THE
ROLL-OFF. In fairness to all teams, lane assignments on position nights rotate, i.e. WEEK8 1st vs 2nd on 2nd pair,
3rd vs 4th on 3rd pair, WEEK16 1ST vs 2ND on 3rd pair, 3RD vs 4TH ON 4th pair, etc.
1.1 Management
Management of this league is vested in the Board of Directors, which consists of the officers and team
captains. The entire league is responsible for electing officers and adopting league rules. A majority of those
present constitutes a quorum at league meetings.
1.2 Fees and Monies
Each bowler pays $12.00 per night. Of this amount, $9.25 covers the bowling fee, $2.40 goes to the prize
fund, and $.35 pays the Secretary/Treasurer's fee. Not only is each bowler responsible for his or her bowling
fee, each must pay for the last two weeks of the season by the fourth week of the league schedule. THE
TWO-WEEK PAYMENT IS NON-REFUNDABLE.
League funds shall be placed in an account with THE HOUSE on a weekly basis. Two officers must sign for
any withdrawals. As required by USBC rules protecting league funds, the President must verify the account
balance each month. Individual bowlers are responsible for any returned checks and penalties.
When a regular bowler is absent, each team is responsible for making sure that his or her bowling fee is paid.
It can be paid by either the bowler or the substitute, or the two can split the fee. In the end, the regular bowler
is responsible.
If a bowler resigns, follow USBC rules; except, in addition to the "2-week responsibility" specified in the
USBC rules, the final two-week pre-payment is forfeited to the league prize fund--any replacement
bowler pays his/her own "last 2-week guarantee".
1.3 Prize Committee
The committee shall consist of the Captain (or his/her representative) from each team and be chaired by the
Vice-President. The committee shall develop a prize schedule and present its recommendation to the
LEAGUE for approval by the eighth week of bowling.
1.4 Eligibility for Prizes
A member must bowl at least two-thirds of the season or 64 games to qualify for individual awards. There are
no exceptions to this rule . A bowler can qualify for only one individual prize in the following order:
High average (at the completion of season)
High series
High game
High series handicap (after a minimum of 21 games)
High game handicap (after a minimum of 21 games)
1.5 Average
Highest book average shall be used for a bowler’s first 9-games of the season, current average afterwards.
A new bowler's average shall be established after she or he completes a full three-game set, not just 3-games
bowled. These items apply to substitutes as well as regular bowlers. No blind score is figured into a bowler's
average when she or he is absent on a given night.
1.6 Handicap
Handicaps are determined on an individual basis. The handicap allowance is 100 percent of the difference
between the individual's average and a base score of 200.
1.7 Substitutes and Vacancies
The Secretary distributes and maintains a list of substitutes. Each team is responsible for arranging for a
substitute when one of its regular bowlers is absent. Substitutes who bowl in a position round must have an
average in this league within (plus or minus) ten pins of the average of the person for whom they are bowling.
This also applies to substitutes filling a vacancy in a position round. Subs bowling on ROLLOFF night must
meet the +/-10 criteria AND have previously bowled at least 12 games in our league. Substitutes are not eligible
for league awards. If a substitute joins the league as a regular bowler, any games she or he bowled as a substitute
count towards the 64 games required for the season. Because substitutes can earn awards only after they have
joined the league as a regular bowler, scores from prior games do not count toward prize categories.
See 1.2 fees and 1.10 blind for additional information about substitutes and vacancies.
1.8 Legal Line-up
A legal lineup consists of two bowlers with at least one from the regular roster. Pre-bowls count as present.
All bowlers must be sanctioned. A forfeit shall not be declared until both teams have completed the 3rd frame
of the game in question. NO SANCTION-----NO BOWL.
1.9 Pre-Bowl Post-Bowl
An individual or couple may pre-bowl in anticipation of an absence, rather than paying for a substitute to bowl.
The rest of the team will bowl as scheduled. The house will submit a computer printout to the League
Secretary to authenticate pre-bowl scores. This rule may reduce the need for subs. NO POST BOWLING!!
LIMIT OF TWO PRE-BOWLS PER TEAM FOR ROLL-OFF NIGHT!!!!!
1.10 Blind Scores
When a bowler is absent for any game, the team must calculate the bowlers score for that game as his or her
average, minus ten pins. If the bowler is absent for more than three weeks in a row with no substitutes, the
team must use a blind score of 120 and a handicap of 80 . Scores for absent bowlers do not count toward the
bowler's average
1.11 Tardy Bowlers
A bowler arriving late at the bowling center can bowl the current game ONLY if both teams have not yet
completed the third frame of the game. Late bowlers shall bowl catch up to make up missed frames.
1.12 Team Standings
Standings are determined on a point basis: Two points are awarded for each game, and one point is awarded for
total pins (max 7-points.) A replacement team assumes the point standings for the team it replaces. If a team forfeits,
the opposing team must roll at least its team average, minus 10 pins per bowler per game to be eligible for the
forfeited points. At the end of each half of the season, the team with the most points is declared the winner of that half.
If two teams are tied for total points for that half, head-to-head point totals are used to determine the winner. If the
series is split, total pins for that half determines the winner.
1.13 Compliance with Association Rules
All other rules shall be in compliance with USBC rules and regulations.
1.14 Special Circumstances
The Crazy Eights generally do not bowl on holidays. If Buffaloe Lanes closes due to weather or other
emergency the league will not bowl but will vote on a makeup date at a league meeting. If the weather
changes suddenly enough to make travel dangerous, the President can act to postpone league play.
If in doubt members should call the bowling alley to find out whether the league will bowl. The
house will have this information no later than one hour before the league is scheduled to play.
1.15 Non-Participants
Non-participants (children, non-bowling subs, friends and family) must remain out of the bowling area (not
beyond the carpeted area.) Regular team members sitting out due to illness etc are not affected by this rule.
1.16 Restriction of Lane Use
On the day of a scheduled league match, bowlers cannot bowl on any lane assigned to the league within three
hours before the match.
